writing children's books money
Is self publishing a waste of time and money?

I have written a children’s book and the only nibble I got after sending my manuscript off to 11 different Australian publishers was one said I should come in and discuss self publishing. I know that I have to pay for it to be published so my question is it is a scam and a rip off? Will my book ever see the light of day in a book shop?

If you really believe in the book, don’t pay attention to the publishers. They’re worried about what’s out there now- if you don’t sell them something they’re used to, they won’t buy it. You can self-publish for free at some places, but they do take some serious profits.

Good luck!

Women Writing about Money

This study addresses a paradox in the lives of women in Jane Austen’s time who had no legal access to money yet were held responsible for domestic expenditure. The book translates the fictional money of the novels of Jane Austen’s day into the power of contemporary spendable incomes, and from the perspective of what the British pound could buy at the market, the economic lives of women in the novels emerge as part of a general picture of women’s economic disability. Through the work of writers such as Austen and Edgeworth, as well as those of magazine fiction, the author examines the professional lives of women authors, their publishers, their profits, and the demands of their reading public. By linking authorship to the economic lives of contemporary women, Women Writing About Money links the fantasy worlds of women’s fiction with the social and economic realities of both readers and writers.

Cooking the Books: Mythologies of Money

Cooking the Books: Mythologies of Money

$108.46

Money was invented when human beings minted coins. Then we printed paper money, and now we have e-cash. Or so the fiction of money’s origins would have it. Dr. Kassulke unveils the purely mythological status money has in contemporary Western societies. She presents a wide range of concepts attached to money in its various forms, from coins to paper to e-cash. Examples are drawn from children’s literature, popular novels, films, advertising, biographies, financial journalism, political-economic theory, and sociology. With considerable sensitivity to both textual analysis and historical context, Kassulke provides a penetrating scrutiny of the most globally important concept of our time: money. She pinpoints how money’s mythologies determine social relations as well as subjectivity. Perceptive, lucid, and elegant, Cooking the Books exposes an important area of cultural activity that will be of great interest to scholars and students in cultural studies, communications studies, and comparative literature.

This volume presents the results of a two-year research project which examined the development and use of reading and writing by school-aged children. The studies examined the relationships between children’s reading and writing by looking at the social contexts that surrounded their understandings and uses of reading and writing; the cognitive processes that the readers and writers invoked in completing different kinds of tasks; and the products that were produced, including the ideas that were developed in reading and writing, and the ways in which these ideas were structured in presentation or recall. The results point to new understandings about children’s context for literacy, and ways in which children at distinctly different phases of their schooling experiences approach reading and writing. The author contrasts ways in which children at each of the differing ages approach their reading and writing tasks, illuminating the knowledge they already have and what they have yet to learn.

From the Authors: In this book, we seek to explain the vital importance of sharing ideas with the young through children’s literature and nurturing a richer appreciation of the books themselves. We had several goals in writing this book: To help the adult reader recognize the many ways children benefit from literature at different times in their lives and to appreciate what happens when a child is engaged by a book To acquaint the adult reader with the wealth of children’s books that are available today and to enable that reader to make critical judgments about them To equip the reader with a range of proven strategies to bring children together with books productively and pleasurably This highly lauded text, with a “ reader-response” approach and extensive inclusion of culturally diverse literature, has been updated to include coverage of such important topics as technology in the classroom, visual literacy, and the influence of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2000 on reading instruction in the public schools. The third edition is packed with new and revised practical applications, and features complete revisions of three key chapters (Multicultural and International Literature, Picture Books, and Literary Meaning-Making and Children’s Response to Literature.) The authors have also expanded coverage of important and timely topics: the re-emergence of graphic novels (aka comic books); the influence of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2000 on reading instruction in the public schools; censorship; visual depictions in traditional literature; historical evolution of realistic fiction; and magical realism.
