The Tragic Death of Govinder Nazran 1964 – 2008
It is very sad when such a popular, well loved artist dies and especially one so young. Govinder Nazran tragically died on Tuesday 30th December 2008 after suffering a seizure on Christmas Eve.
Govinder Nazran had international success with his naïve representations of cats and dogs. In his mixed media artworks he often used dollar notes, newspaper cuttings and coins to create artworks rich with layers and texture. Although his work in style is naïve there is so much more to each painting than the usual naïve cliché of an adored pet. Many of his pieces are about the conflict between good and evil. He said “The world is a place where the innocent pay the heaviest price. It affects me deeply. It’s like living in the garden of Good and Evil. I can’t ignore it, so I depict it in the form of these innocent pictures. I leave it to the individual to look at my paintings and choose what they would like to see, innocence or malevolence.” Govinder often gave his work amusing titles as he loved to see viewers of his work smiling at them.
After studying Graphic Design from 1980-1983 Govinder Nazran went on to study for a Higher Diploma in Graphic Design at Lincoln Art College. Govinder moved to London where he worked on illustrations for children’s books, moving to Cambridge 6 months later to continue working as a freelance illustrator.
Govinder Nazran became a photographic art director, working on fashion shoots all over the world. In 1993 Govinder moved back to the North of England to work freelance on card designs for major publishing countries.
In 1999 he approached the publishers Washington Green where his work has been published ever since. Govinder’s fantastic limited edition collection of prints and sculptures can be viewed and purchased here (http://www.collectorsprints.co.uk/artist_page.php?sort=New&numRes=ALL&artist=Govinder+Nazran). In 2004 he became the “Best Selling Published Artist” in the industry’s Fine Art Trade Guild Awards. His work was highly acclaimed in Japan where he enjoyed two sell out tours.
Govinder was known as a shy man who sometimes struggled to explain his work, he once said “my true personality reveals itself through my paintings”. Govinder lived in Yorkshire with his wife Sarah and his daughter Eden.
Top 5 Picks for Govinder Artwork
1. ‘Superstar’ , Limited Edition Giclée print, released 2006. Govinder’s depiction of a lovable, eccentric looking dog caught the eye of many, with the textures in the piece giving it an extra something special.
2. ‘Le Chat Parisien, Limited Edition Giclée Canvas on board, released 2006. See here : http://www.collectorsprints.co.uk/item_closeup.php?itemid=11047 . This stunning piece incorporates sections of French newsprint and international mixed media, which gives it a distinct flavour of France – along with the distinctly French whiskers adorning the cat himself!
3. ‘King Tut’, Limited Edition sculpture, hand painted resin. Released 2007. This smooth, curved sculpture is a classic Govinder sculpture. The sleek lines and sequin adornments give it a personality all of it’s own.
4. ‘Bow Tie’, miniature Limited Edition Giclée print, released 2005. The business-like cat wearing a work tie is patterned as if dressed in a shirt and off to work. As one of Govinder’s themed pieces, this small piece would be a sweet addition to any cat-lover’s home.
5. ‘Brimstone and Treacle’, Limited Edition Silkscreen print, released 2004. See here: http://www.collectorsprints.co.uk/item_closeup.php?itemid=1255 . This is a classic Govinder depiction, featuring his box-shaped cats in sequence. As a silkscreen, the printing technique is very specialized; each individual colour and shade requires a separate screen which is applied to the print. The whole process is lengthy and requires considerable skill.

Children $33.98 The French photographer William Ropp is well-known for the unique style in which he captures the mysterious aspects of human nature. Taking outstanding pictures of children is only one part of the internationally renowned photographer’s oeuvre. Surprisingly, it is not the viewer who gazes at the children; they rather redirect the stare towards the person looking at the unfathomable black and white pictures. Seemingly coming from a different time, these young human beings unify ancient mysteries and timeless questions in their appearances. The artist’s foreword gives an insight into his technique, illuminating the enigmatic pictures.A limited edition with original photos packaged in a box will also be available. |

Children’s Books In Children’s Hands $129.33 From the Authors: In this book, we seek to explain the vital importance of sharing ideas with the young through children’s literature and nurturing a richer appreciation of the books themselves. We had several goals in writing this book: To help the adult reader recognize the many ways children benefit from literature at different times in their lives and to appreciate what happens when a child is engaged by a book To acquaint the adult reader with the wealth of children’s books that are available today and to enable that reader to make critical judgments about them To equip the reader with a range of proven strategies to bring children together with books productively and pleasurably This highly lauded text, with a “ reader-response” approach and extensive inclusion of culturally diverse literature, has been updated to include coverage of such important topics as technology in the classroom, visual literacy, and the influence of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2000 on reading instruction in the public schools. The third edition is packed with new and revised practical applications, and features complete revisions of three key chapters (Multicultural and International Literature, Picture Books, and Literary Meaning-Making and Children’s Response to Literature.) The authors have also expanded coverage of important and timely topics: the re-emergence of graphic novels (aka comic books); the influence of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2000 on reading instruction in the public schools; censorship; visual depictions in traditional literature; historical evolution of realistic fiction; and magical realism. |

Writing Children’s Books for Dummies $15.98 Everyone loves a children’s book. And many dream about writing one. But is it actually possible for an unpublished writer—armed with a good story idea and a love of kids—to write, sell, publish, and promote a book? Yes, it is! Veteran children’s book publishing executive and author Lisa Rojany Buccieri and author Peter Economy show you how, in their incredibly useful 2005 first edition of Writing Children’s Books For Dummies®. Buccieri and Economy begin by explaining the basics of the children’s book business, from the nuts and bolts of the various formats and genres—with helpful illustrations to aid you—to the intricacies of the book publishing market, a list of recent award-winning books, and a first peek into the particular mind set that writing children’s books requires. (Hint: Throw out the adult rules, and think like a kid!) Then the authors dive into the actual writing process itself, with tips on setting up a workspace, brainstorming great book ideas, researching the subject you decide on, even speaking with the sorts of kids you hope will eventually read the book. They show you how to create compelling characters and develop them in the manuscript; how to outline and write a plot "arc" of conflict, change, and resolution; how to master the difficult art of writing dialogue; and how to use active (rather than passive) language to keep your story moving along and interesting to young minds. Or, if you’re planning to write a creative nonfiction children’s book—on a topic such as science, nature, or a historical figure, for example—the authors include a chapter on this, too. Ready, set, go… it’s time to sit down and write! Once you’ve finished your book, however, the process has only begun. Now you will refine, submit, and hopefully sell your manuscript. Here again, the authors of Writing Children’s Books For Dummies come through for you. They deliver solid advice on hiring an illustrator—or not; participating in workshops and conferences to learn the business and hone a story; finding an agent; and, finally, submitting the manuscript to publishers and—if you are successful—signing a contract. Along the way, the authors also include tips on handling rejection; a quick primer on the various editors in publishing houses (and how they work to make your book its best); and making a plan to publicize the book, including hiring a publicist if necessary. Like all For Dummies® books, Writing Children’s Books For Dummies highlights "The Part of Tens," which includes the Ten Best Ways to Promote Your Story and More Than Ten Great Sources for Storylines. And the ever-helpful Cheat Sheet includes Tips for Editing your Children’s Book Manuscript, Children’s Book No-No’s, Twelve Commandments for Writing Younger Children’s Books, and Tips on Promotion. From setting down that first word on paper to doing a successful publicity … |

Children of the French Empire $214.48 This book vividly recreates the lives of the children born of relationships between French men and African women from the time France colonized much of West Africa towards the end of the nineteenth century, until independence in 1960. Set within the context of the history of miscegenation in colonial French West Africa, the study focuses upon the lives and identities of the resulting mixed-race or metis population, and their struggle to overcome the handicaps they faced in a racially divided society. Owen White has drawn a valuable evaluation of the impact and importance of French racial theories, and offers a critical discussion of colonial policies in such areas as citizenship and education, providing original insights into problems of identity in colonial society. |
